On to this week’s goal: Introducing Food Healing Basics!

Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia are illnesses that are indicative of a severely depleted mind-body-spirit condition. Therefore, in order to recover from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, it is critical to nourish yourself on all levels—body, mind, and spirit. This blog begins the lengthy discussion of food healing and nourishment that I will continue to build upon in subsequent blogs.

Our bodies are miracle workers, but they need the proper nutrition and healing phytochemicals obtained from fresh fruits and vegetables to heal from illness and function properly. In fact, it is critical to flood your body with nutritional and medicinal food. Everything you drink and eat matters to regaining your health. An added difficulty is that our food supply is depleted of proper nutrition; so it is necessary to take extra measures to ensure adequate nutrition and healing phytochemicals.

The best thing you can do to promote health is to go back to the basics of nature. Our food should not be comprised of anything that didn’t come from the earth directly. That means no chemicals, additives, processed sugar, or dyes. But, none of us are perfect, so everything in moderation is a key phrase for good health maintenance. Our bodies have to work hard enough every day to cleanse us of the constant exposure to man-made environmental toxins; they shouldn’t have to detox from the food we eat.

Choose Organic! Increase Consumption of Organic Produce

The nutrition and the presence of powerful medicinal phytochemicals in fresh, organic fruits and vegetables can aid us in healing from illness and disease. Allow yourself to imagine, as with the air you breathe and the water you drink, that the food you eat is a powerful gift of nourishment and healing provided by Source for you in your physical form.

It’s time to start chipping away at what we put into our body for sustenance. What we drink and eat can help us heal, or keep us ill.

Gradually Reduce and Eliminate Foods that Aggravate Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia

Choose healthy foods

These are the foods that drain our life essence and create inflammation and illness in our bodies. When I was deathly ill, if I ate from the list below, I actually felt my life essence being depleted – in real time. The following are the biggest illness causing and aggravating foods – processed foods of any kind, processed sugar and sweets, wheat, dairy, pasta, coffee, sodas, alcohol, and red meat. This is not everything, but eating from this list definitely aggravates chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. I realize this is a rather large list, but, items from it can be gradually reduced and eliminated. Strive every day to making your diet cleaner and healthier. You will start to see results, and once you get on the positive results train, you will go faster and faster.

I told you we will take things one tiny step at a time, and so, for this week,

Wellness Assignment #5:  Food Choices that will begin to Restore your Health and Vitality

Every Day:

  1. Continue doing everything that was taught in wellness assignments 1-5. If you need to review them, here are their links:
    1. Series 1 Blog
    2. Series 2 Blog
    3. Series 3 Blog
    4. Series 4 Blog
  2. Buy organic produce for your meals. You need non-toxic, potent nutrition and phytochemicals to aid in your healing.
  3. Every day, eat at least 3 servings from this list – kale, chard, collard greens, dandelion greens, spinach, green beans, Brussels sprouts, or broccoli. These are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and healing phytochemicals. Please eat them raw and chew everything to oblivion before swallowing to get as much out of them as you can.
  4. Cook with organic avocado, coconut, or sunflower oils. These are healthy oils that hold up to cooking heat. Don’t use olive oil to cook with, it gets destroyed by heat. Your body needs these healthy fats to restore itself and build up your immune system.
  5. If you drink sodas, STOP. Read this blog if you need an incentive to quit.
  6. Every time you are about to eat some food item that contains wheat, stop yourself and try to make another choice. Try rye, oats, or rice based products. Wheat drains your life essence, creates massive amounts of inflammation, and with CF and FM, we need to do everything we can to build you back up and decrease inflammation.

Ok, that is your holistic healing assignment for this week. If you can’t do everything, that’s ok, just do what you can and every day try to just a little bit more. Next week, we will continue to talk about healing food. Take it one small, manageable step at a time and you will be able to heal yourself!

Create Your New Self Now!

On to this week’s goal: Expanding our Breath Work Technique and Staying Hydrated!

Now that you’ve had a week to start working abdominal breathing into your daily life, we’re going to add some more healing power into the recipe. If you missed learning about abdominal breathing, you can review the technique and its benefits in my previous abdominal breathing blog. This week we are going to use the healing color of green with our breath work. Green is the universal color for healing and growth. It is neutral, not hot or cold, and imparts the vibration of energy and health into wherever it is sent in the body.

When you are in your private healing space, you are already practicing your abdominal breathing. We are going to add to this healing technique. As you inhale, allow yourself to visualize the air entering your lungs as a deep vibrant green. When you pause for a moment at the end of your inhalation, imagine that this healing green energy is being absorbed from the air in your lungs into your bloodstream where it can then flow to every cell in your body. Every breath you take, imagine that you are receiving more and more healing green energy that flows to every cell easily, where it heals, stimulates, and revitalizes.

Then, on every exhalation, imagine that any illness, fatigue, or negative energy flows out of your body and is absorbed immediately by the earth and transformed into yin earth energy.

Holistic Health

You are breathing in life and vitality and exhaling away all illness with every breath!

Staying Hydrated!

It’s time to start chipping away at what we put into our body for sustenance. What we drink and eat can help us heal, or keep us ill.

I told you we will take things one tiny step at a time, and so, for this week, I want you to think about the amount of water you drink. As we need air to breathe to stay alive, we also need water to stay alive. Our bodies are mostly water and it is used in every important chemical reaction in our bodies. Staying properly hydrated allows our immune system to function properly, along with every organ and system we have in body. For more information, check out my past blog on water and proper hydration.

Drinking enough water will help your body heal and you will feel more energized.

water

Be aware of how much water you drink every day, and make the effort to get enough. For the average adult, the eight glasses a day rule is fairly accurate. Add more to that total if you are more physically active or the weather conditions are hot or dry. Know that you can count any raw, fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily water quota. You can add about 90% of the weight of fruits and vegetables as water weight. You can’t do that with cooked foods, and if you drink coffee, soda, or eat meat then subtract a cup from your daily hydration quota.

Wellness Assignment #4:  Breath with the Healing Color of Green and Stay Hydrated!

Every Day:

  1. When you wake up in the morning, start your day with five abdominal breaths, but now add in breathing in the healing color of green and sending it to every cell in your body. On every exhalation, you release any dark negative energy or illness that you are ready to let go of.
  2. When you go to sleep at night, place a full glass of water next to your bed. After you wake up and do your five abdominal breaths, reach for that glass of life and drink it all down. There is no better way to start the day by giving your body what it needs to survive!
  3. This week increase the time you spend in your private healing space to ten minutes a day. And, as in the morning, practice your abdominal breathing using the healing color of green on the inhalation and releasing illness on the exhalation. Work on allowing time to stand still in your private space and set it up so that you are not disturbed by friends or family while you are in your healing space. Play music, light a candle, and practice your abdominal breathing. This is a powerful healing method that we will continue to build upon in subsequent blog posts.
  4. Tie a string around your wrist or set up some kind of visual reminder that you will look at often. When you see it, it is your signal to take five abdominal breaths and send green healing energy into your body while exhaling negative energy and illness.
  5. Before you eat lunch, drink a glass of water. And, do this again before dinner. Drink water before you eat and you will get full faster. Don’t drink water after you eat, this dilutes the digestive acid in your stomach.
  6. Keep a log of how much water you drink, include what you get from raw, fresh fruits and vegetables.
  7. When you perform your nightly ritual to get ready for bed, this is also an excellent time to practice your abdominal breathing. Again, pull in the green healing energy into every cell and release negative energy on every exhale.
  8. And lastly, when you finally do get into bed, take another five abdominal breaths before you do anything else, such as, picking up a book or chatting with your partner.

This might seem like we added a lot, but, the more you practice, the easier it will become. Eventually, you will no longer have to remind yourself to do it. It will be as natural as, well, breathing.

Ok, that is your holistic healing assignment for this week. Next week, we will talk about healing food. Take it one small, manageable step at a time and you will be able to heal yourself!

Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia – You Can Heal Yourself Holistically! Blog Series 3

Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia

In my Series 1 Blog post, I gave an overview of simple holistic steps towards recovering from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. In subsequent CFS and FM blog series, I’ll highlight a particular task or wellness technique that you can incorporate into your lifestyle. We’ll take things one small manageable piece at a time. If you follow along with this series and incorporate the holistic techniques into your daily life, you will begin to feel better and better. Moving towards health and wellness takes time and commitment, but every small step you take will move you closer to your goal. I know that it is well within anyone’s potential to recover from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia using holistic methods, since I’ve done it myself! Read more of my story here.

So, are you ready to heal? Then hang in there, you can do it too!

In my Series 2 Blog, I talked about creating a private, healing space in some corner of your home, a place where you can go to nurture yourself and relax. You want to have time in your private, space every day, even if it’s only five minutes. Carving time out for yourself is critical for your healing regimen.

rainbow healing

This week, in Series 3, I’m going to start introducing you to holistic wellness techniques that you can do in your private, healing place. As I mentioned before, CFS and FMS are all about learning or relearning how to nurture your body, mind, and spirit. Until you learn how to take care of yourself and give to yourself, it will be extremely difficult to heal. That is an understatement, but I dislike the word impossible.

This week’s goal: Learning Proper Breath work that will Help You Heal!

The first and one of the most important and powerful holistic wellness techniques that I want you to learn and practice every day is called abdominal breathing. It is the method of breathing that you were born doing naturally. Over time, in our busy, stressed out society, just about everyone morphs from a slow, abdominal breather into a fast, chest breather. Chest breathers take in a lot less oxygen and release less carbon dioxide and other gaseous waste. This type of breathing exacerbates every kind of illness or disease.

In a nutshell, abdominal breathing involves drawing air into lungs and expanding them deeply downwards towards your belly button. You should see your tummy expand, not your chest. And, when you exhale, your tummy should contract and you can imagine squeezing out all the bad air in your lungs like you would squeeze water out of a sponge. Abdominal breathing turns every breath you take into a mini-healing session. It’s power to help you heal cannot be overestimated.

Deep Breaths

For a detailed description of how to perform abdominal breathing and all of its benefits, please check out last month’s blog on abdominal breathing.  Once you understand how to perform abdominal breathing, it’s time to put it into daily practice.

Wellness Assignment #1:  Incorporate Abdominal Breathing into your Daily Life

The wellness assignment for this week is to practice abdominal breathing every chance you get.

Every Day:

  1. When you wake up in the morning, start your day with five abdominal breaths.
  2. Spend at least five minutes a day in your private, healing space and when you are there, practice your abdominal breathing. Allow time to stand still in your private space and set it up so that you are not disturbed by friends or family while you are in your healing space. Play music, light a candle, and practice your abdominal breathing. This is a powerful healing method that we will continue to build upon in subsequent blog posts.
  3. Tie a string around your wrist or set up some kind of visual reminder that you will look at often. When you see it, it is your signal to take five abdominal breaths.
  4. When you perform your nightly ritual to get ready for bed, this is also an excellent time to practice your abdominal breathing. It is naturally a time when we begin to slow down and end our day. So, why not relax yourself even further by practicing your abdominal breathing?
  5. And lastly, when you finally do get into bed, take another five abdominal breaths before you do anything else, such as, picking up a book or chatting with your partner.

This might seem like a lot to think about, but, once you retrain yourself to perform abdominal breathing naturally, eventually, you will no longer have to remind yourself to do it.

Ok, that is your holistic healing assignment for this week. Next week, we will build on our abdominal breathing technique and add in some wellness visualization. We will take it one small, manageable step at a time and you will be able to heal yourself!

Stay tuned, and walk the path of wellness!

Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia – You Can Heal Yourself Holistically! Blog Series 2

Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia

In my Series 1 Blog post, I gave an overview of simple holistic steps towards recovering from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. In Series 2 and the subsequent CFS and FM blog series, I’ll highlight a particular step that you can incorporate into your lifestyle. We’ll take things one small manageable piece at a time. If you follow along with this series and incorporate the holistic techniques, you will begin to feel better and better. Moving towards health and wellness takes time and commitment, but every small step you take will move you closer to your goal. If you have questions along the way, don’t hesitate to reply to my blog posts and ask them.

I know that it is well within anyone’s potential to recover from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia using holistic methods, since I’ve done it myself! And, I healed myself when I was suffering from a lot more than just chronic fatigue (CFS) and fibromyalgia (FMS). I was suffering from a rare autoimmune illness called mixed connective tissue disorder. In addition to the CFS and FMS, I had scleroderma, Raynaud’s syndrome, random nerve pain, loss of digestive motility, trigeminal neuralgia, difficulty swallowing, insomnia, and panic attacks. I was a real mess. But, I healed myself holistically, when Western medicine told me there was no hope for a cure. Fortunately, for me, I ignored them. Actually, I fired them! Now, I feel great, I’ve got my life back, and I want to help others do the same.

Holly's Story

So, are you ready to heal? Then hang in there, you can do it too!

CFS and FMS are illnesses that can result from a whole host of contributing factors, such as, dietary, genetic predisposition, environmental toxins, burning your candle at both ends, poor recovery from trauma or other illness, and unrelieved stress. In other words, however, you’ve arrived at where you are, you’ve undoubtedly run yourself into the ground. And now, your body, mind, and spirit have said enough, and are forcing you to STOP! I urge you to please listen to your higher self. CFS and FMS are all about learning or relearning how to nurture your body, mind, and spirit.

This week’s goal: Making the commitment to nurture yourself!

If you have CFS or FM, you know you can only push yourself so far. Then, you hit a wall. In fact, sometimes, you don’t just hit it; it comes crashing down on you. This is happening for a reason. Your body, mind, and spirit are forcing you to stop your current modus operandi and rethink things. It is critical to start nurturing yourself.

You must first remove the telephone pole from your own eye, before you can remove the splinter from someone else’s eye!

Wellness Assignment #1: Your Sacred Healing Space

The wellness assignment for this week is to create a sacred healing space in your home, just for you. It should be in a room where you can close the door and not be disturbed. It doesn’t have to take up the entire room, it can be carved out of a corner, but you want to be able to close the door to keep out disturbances. I want you to make a comfortable spot to sit, in a chair, on a floor cushion, whatever is most comfortable for you. Then, I want you to find some soothing music that speaks to your soul, music that calms you, fills your heart with peace, and resonates with who you are. I want you to find other items to put into your sacred healing space that speak to you of healing and love. You can add candles, crystals, healing images, special happy mementos, anything that evokes a pleasant, safe, nurtured, feeling within you.

Relaxation Zone

When you step into your sacred healing space, you should feel tensions falling away; it is your own private healing hideaway. When you are in there, request that others give you privacy and don’t disturb you. Once you’ve created your private healing space, spend at least one five minute relaxation session every day, playing your music and zoning out in your comfy spot.

Ok, that is your holistic healing assignment for this week. Next week, we will build on using your healing space to do some holistic wellness techniques.

Stay tuned, and walk the path of wellness!

Proper Abdominal Breathing is a Cornerstone for Holistic Health and Wellness

Hello to all my holistic health blog readers! It’s good to get back to my blog writing. I’ve been teaching a series of holistic health classes since the beginning of the year, and my blog writing time was usurped. But, I now have a wealth of material to share and time to pick it up again. So, it’s back into the fray with the importance of a proper breathing technique.

Deep Breaths

There’s a Right Way to Breathe?
Yes, actually, there is. Most people are shallow chest breathers. They breathe air only into the upper third of their lungs and then they’ve already started exhaling. This method short changes our health in a big way. Over time, this type of breathing can take a toll on the body, contributing to creating illness, or keep you from reaching the level of health you desire.

How does that happen?
Air is necessary for life and it aids in healing. By not breathing deeply and slowly, we cut the process off prematurely. The typical chest breather does not fully exhale all the CO2 and waste out of their lungs, nor do they breathe in fully all the beautiful oxygen that their lungs can hold. And, with rapid shallow breathing the O2/CO2 transfer crossing the capillaries isn’t given enough time to complete. By using slow, full, abdominal breathing you do.

It’s all about Abdominal Breathing!
All right, what is the proper way to breathe? The answer is to use abdominal breathing, and actually, you were born doing it. All healthy babies naturally use abdominal breathing. But, on our way to adulthood in our fast-paced, stressed-out society, we have unlearned how to breathe properly. No worries! We can fix this!

Abdominal breathing has two components that are equally as important, the inhalation phase, as well as the exhalation phase. The inhalation phase is accomplished by drawing air deeply into your lungs and allowing them to expand downwards, which allows them to fill completely. Follow this with a slight pause, and then a full and complete exhalation of all CO2 and other gaseous waste. Just as most people don’t inhale deeply enough, they also don’t exhale deeply enough. There’s a lot of old, stale air sitting in the bottom of our lungs that will stay there unless we give it a good push out.

Let’s Break It Down Further.

  • First, I’d like you to exhale and deliberately squeeze out all the air that is in your lungs right now. Imagine your lungs as a sponge that you are squeezing all the water out of.
  • Now, inhale deeply with your goal being to fill and expand your lungs to capacity. To do this, draw air into your body and imagine it travelling all the way down to your navel.
  • Don’t think so much about expanding your chest, but rather, about expanding your lungs downwards and filling your belly. You should see your belly expand as you pull air deeply into your lungs towards your belly button. Inhale as much air as you can and as deeply as you can.
  • When you are full to capacity, strongly exhale all the CO2 and old air out of your lungs. As you continue to inhale and exhale deeply, it is even more powerful if you pause for a moment after you fully inhale. This will give your lung capillaries a few precious extra moments to draw even more life giving oxygen into your blood stream.
  • Then continue to exhale deeply, freeing up extra real estate in your lungs to fill with clean, fresh air.

What are the Benefits of Abdominal Breathing?
Abdominal breathing will allow you to maximally oxygenate your blood and tissues. By retraining yourself to breath using abdominal breathing – you will be physically stronger, have more endurance, reduce stress and feel calmer, boost your immune system, and basically improve all bodily functions. Abdominal breathing will help you with your recovery from any illness, chronic or acute.

On an emotional level, taking deep, slow breathes is centering and calming. If you think to try it when you’re upset or angry, you will feel yourself become calmer and more relaxed. The tension will fall away. Abdominal breathing is also a critical beginning step in learning how to meditate.

On a spiritual level, you can allow yourself to imagine the inhaled air as a healing energy and even give it a color, green is great for all healing work, and you can send it anywhere in your body. Imagine the healing green traveling to wherever you need healing. When you exhale, you can imagine that the old air carries with it any illness, negative energy or experience that you want to let go of. Anything that no longer serves you can be released – every time you exhale.

Give Yourself a Healing Session with Every Breath You Take!
By practicing abdominal breathing, you can transform every breath you take into a mini-healing session. It’s an amazingly powerful health and wellness technique.

Training Yourself to Use Abdominal Breathing.
Training yourself to use abdominal breathing takes time, but it’s simple to do. As soon as you wake up in the morning, even before you open your eyes start your abdominal breathing. See how long you can keep it up as you go about your daily morning preparations. And, abdominal breathing in the shower is exhilarating. Then, as you go about your day, any time you remember that abdominal breathing exists, start doing it. At night, when you go to bed, practice your abdominal breathing, and, it will help you fall asleep faster. The more you practice, the faster your body will learn and begin to do it normally.

Abdominal Breathing is One of the Cornerstones of attaining and maintaining Holistic Health and Wellness!
