What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is among the oldest healing traditions in the world, and has been practiced in China, and other Asian countries for thousands of years. It is one of the many facets of healing available in Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM.
According to TCM, health is achieved by maintaining the body in a 'balanced state', and disease is due to an internal imbalance. This imbalance leads to blockages in the flow of a person's life force or vital energy, known as 'Qi'. This life force energy, or Qi, flows along pathways in the body, known as meridians. This movement of Qi along the meridians, can be thought of, as rivers of energy flowing throughout the body, nourishing, irrigating, maintaining and regulating all of our tissues and organs. Acupuncture is one method used in TCM, to unblock the Qi flow, encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. and restore the body to balance.
Specifically, acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into certain points on the body and along the meridians to adjust and restore the proper flow of Qi. It may also involve the application of heat, electrical stimiulation, or acupressure (manual finger pressure) on these same acupuncture points.
The acupuncture treatment serves to unblock the obstruction of Qi and reestablish the balanced flow through the meridians. This will help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, circulation, and energy production activities.
The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
What is a Session Like?
Your initial acupuncture visit will begin with a detailed client history. After review, I will begin diagnosing your ailment. Palpation (to explore by touch) of various acupuncture points on the body, an examination of the tongue, as well as the pulse, are common diagnostic techniques used in acupuncture. Using all of this information, I will determine the nature of your symptoms and devise a treatment plan.
Next, very fine needles will be inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body. I may also use heat or electrical stimulation to enhance acupuncture's therapeutic effects. The needles typically remain in place for thirty to forty minutes.
The number of treatment sessions depends on the seriousness of your condition. A typical course of acupuncture treatment is 10 sessions, although significant improvements can occur after just a few visits. Your first visit may take 90 minutes, with subsequent visits lasting about 60 minutes.
Does it hurt? Unlike hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are solid and hair-thin – not designed to cut the skin. They are also inserted to much more shallow levels than hypodermic needles, generally no more than 1/2 -inch to an inch. While each person experiences acupuncture differently, most people feel only a minimal amount of sensation as the needles are inserted. Some people report feeling a sensation of excitement, while others feel relaxed.
