What is Meditation?
Meditation has different connotations to different people, but we consider meditation in this way. The word meditation, is derived from two Latin words: meditari (to think, to dwell upon, to exercise the mind); and mederi (to heal). Its Sanskrit derivation 'medha' means wisdom. We combine the two and define meditation as the practice of focusing the mind on something or nothing (the effect is the same) in order to heal oneself and gain wisdom.
Meditation is a critical and necessary addition to your Wellness toolkit. Though meditation is usually recognized as a largely spiritual practice, it also has many health benefits. Meditation techniques are being implemented in management of life threatening diseases; in transformation of molecular and genetic structure; in reversal of mental illnesses, in accelerated learning programs, in perceptions and communications beyond the physical, in solving problems in atomic and nuclear physics; in gaining better ecological understanding; in management of lifestyle and future world problems.
Some of the many benefits of meditation are:
- Improvement of body luster and general health
- Decreases respiratory rate and oxygen consumption
- Increases blood flow, lowers heart rate, normalizes blood pressure
- Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients
- Leads to deeper level of relaxation and stress reduction
- Decreases muscle tension, reduces tension pain and headaches
- Helps dramatically improve life for those with chronic illness
- Reduces PMS
- Increases seratonin production which influences mood and behavior
- Improves sleep
- Aids in post-operative healing
- Enhances the immune system, and helps those with auto-immune disorders
Research has revealed that meditation also increases activity of 'natural-killer cells', which destroy bacteria and cancer cells. It also reduces activity of viruses
The benefits of meditation are real, but, it also requires perseverance. These benefits will appear over time with a consistent practice; the mind takes time to tame.
